Nissan has its sights firmly set on Europe with its all-new Nissan Micra. The fifth generation of the small hatchback comes with technology from further up the Nissan model-line, with Intelligent Emergency Braking and Lane Departure Prevention.

The new Micra is lower, wider, and longer than its predecessors and has more room inside the cabin.

Power is provided through new, smaller turbo engines and drivetrains.

Three engine specifications will be available, the first the HR09DET, a 0.9-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol. This engine will produce 66kW and 140Nm.

A 1.5-litre diesel will also be available at launch, producing 66Kw and 220Nm

A 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol which makes 54Kw and 96Nm will become available later.

All engines will put power to the ground through a five-speed manual transmission.

Nissan is hoping the car is a big winner in Europe.

“When the first Micra appeared more than 30 years ago, it marked a revolution in the small hatchback segment and opened a new chapter for Nissan. The fifth generation Micra is just as revolutionary, and will raise expectations for what a hatchback can, and should, deliver to its customers,” said Nissan Motor Company CEO Carlos Ghosn.

“Following in the wheel tracks of distinctive cars like Nissan Qashqai and Juke, the latest Micra reinforces Nissan’s position as a leader in automotive design. It also shows our intent to compete right at the top of Europe’s B-segment market – the largest and most competitive B-segment market in the world.”

The Japanese manufacturer claims it paid special attention to driver comfort, resulting in a lower driving position, and greater seat adjustment.

The Micra’s Lane Departure Prevention system is a first for its segment. Other features include intelligent emergency braking with pedestrian recognition, intelligent around view monitor, traffic sign recognition, high beam assist and blind spot warning.

Inside the cabin, the Micra Gen5 comes with a 7-inch full colour central display, providing access to the audio system, satellite navigation, mobile phone, downloadable apps and Siri voice control via Apple CarPlay.
