If you can't own a track, the next best thing is to have friends in mountainous places. The folks who run the Lake Mountain resort, near Marysville in Victoria, are very receptive to the noisy ministrations of motoring enthusiasts, as you can tell by the almost dragstrip-like amounts of rubber on their access road. And they go a step further for us by using two genial old blokes with Stop/Go signs to close off the road and create a kind of real-world racetrack - or rally special stage - just for us.
The cars we brought to uplift us towards motoring nirvana are a salt and pepper group; each great in their own way, but representing two different flavours.
A Maserati Gran Turismo MC Stradale, Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG and Aston Martin Vanquish form the Grand Tourer group, each of them super cars, but none of them supercars. The Audi R8 V10 Plus, McLaren 12C and Lexus LFA clearly are.
We finish our closed-road cavorting by filming a downhill run by the McLaren, Audi and Lexus. It's up there with the most fun I've ever had in a car.
