Nine supercars of the world

Italy and Germany are the easy ones. But have you met the supercars from Mexico, China, Slovenia or Lebanon?

1. LYKAN HYPERSPORT

Representing the Middle East is this gem-infused wedge built by W Motors. In typical Middle Eastern modesty, justifying its US$3.4M price tag is a 552kW twin-turbo flat six, a 385km/h top speed, along with jewels in the headlights and key.

2. TUSHEK RENOVATIO

Hailing from Slovenia, the Renovatio was born from a man’s desire to re-engineer the K1 Attack from nearby Slovakia. It has slightly redesigned bodywork, but it’s completely rebuilt under the hood, with an Audi RS4 V8 engine.

3. KOENIGSEGG REGERA

Not a stranger to the pages of MOTOR, the Regera is the most fearsome hybrid to date. With figures that could rival LaFerrari’s 810kW, it’s hard to comprehend Koenigsegg as a small Swedish company sheltered in a warehouse.

4. ICONA VULCANO

If the Vulcano concept can stay true to its promise of carbonfibre and titanium construction, and a 500kW/840Nm V8 from Corvette, we don’t see any reason why its Chinese origins should detract from its desirability.

5. SPYKER C8 AILERON

The C8 has brought Spyker – a Dutch coachbuilding company that died in the early 20th century– back from the dead. And it brings a fastidiously built cabin, spaceframe chassis, striking looks and an Audi 4.2-litre V8. It hits 100km/h in 4.5sec.

6. MASTRETTA MXT

Okay, we cheated a little here, as the MXT isn’t a supercar –it’s actually a sports car. However, the US$60K MXT is worth a mention. Weighing 980kg, it’s pushed to 100km/h in 4.5sec by a mid-mounted 2.0-litre turbo four. A Mexican Lotus.

7. ZENVO ST1

The Danes didn’t dip their toe in supercar waters with the ST1, they jumped right in. A twin-charged V8 uses 823kW to demolish 100km/h in 3.0sec. The carbonfibre-bodied two-door will also top out at 375km/h. Price? A cool AU$1.05M.

8. HENNESSEY VENOM GT

Proof Americans like to do things big, the Venom was the tuner’s stab at the top-speed record for a production car. They achieved it, with a 428km/h mutant Lotus Elise stuffed with 928kW of twin-turbo V8, but lost it shortly after to the Veyron SS.

9. TRAMONTANA R

“It’s a Marmite car, you either love it or you don’t,” said Sharmi Kalra, the brand’s head of development about the Spanish supercar. And he’s right, with its tandem cockpit, outlandish looks, and range of V8, V10 and V12 engines.
