The Great Race, Bathurst, 1987. Kicking off our ‘Lap of the Gods’ mini-series is this Peter Brock master class on car control.
At the end of lap 155, with the track barely dry, Brock takes a dramatic gamble: he opts for slicks with only five laps left in an attempt to chase down the leading Ford Sierras and claim his ninth win at the Enduro.
The consequences are immediately obvious as Brock has to tame the VL Commodore, twitching with oversteer, down the entire length of pit lane.
It only gets better once Brock’s out on track, where he’s met by a position-hungry Gary Brabham in a BMW M3. The ensuing dogfight is stuff of legend as Brock in the big-power Commodore, on barely warm tyres and a corridor-thin dry line, tries to manage the agile M3.
It’s a cracker. And we’ll be delivering more ‘Lap of the Gods’ goodness each day as we count down towards another Bathurst epic this weekend. Stay tuned.
