Key Points

  • 2015-2021 Toyota HiLux recalled
  • The issue relates to poor stiffness of the rear license plate bracket
  • A total of 156,838 vehicles are affected by the recall

Toyota Australia has issued a recall for 156,838 examples of its 2015-2021 HiLux ute over concerns surrounding the rear license plate bracket.

The affected vehicles were produced between June 2015 and September 2021.

According to the recall notice issued by the Department for Infrastructure, poor stiffness of the rear license plate bracket around the single mounting point could lead to cracking due to metal fatigue when driving on corrugated roads.

The issue could result in the license plate dislodging from the vehicle and/or severed license plate lamp wiring, and could lead to potential injury for other road users.

Toyota says its dealers will inspect, and replace if necessary, the license plate bracket and tray bracket free of charge to vehicle owners.

According to the brand, inspecting and replacing the brackets will take approximately 30 minutes.

Toyota will contact affected owners, but the company can be contacted directly by calling 1800 987 366 or by visiting a dealership, found here.

A VIN list for the affected vehicles can be found here.
