The Lexus LC has landed in Australia, a new flagship two-door to go head-to-head with the likes of the BMW 6 Series and Mercedes-Benz SL.
Two variants are available, a V8 LC 500 and electrically-assisted V6 LC 500 Hybrid, both of which start from a sharp $190,000, slightly more than the BMW 640i but significantly undercutting the Mercedes-Benz SL400, two key rivals according to Lexus Australia CEO Peter McGregor. The non-hybrid LC 500 uses a tweaked version of the familiar 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V8 found in the Lexus RC F and GS F, producing 351kW and 540Nm. Allied to a 10-speed automatic gearbox, 0-100km/h is claimed to take 4.7sec despite a kerb weight of between 1935-1970kg depending on specification.
Its hybrid sibling uses a 220kW/348Nm 3.5-litre V6 assisted by a 132kW/300Nm electric motor for a total system output of 264kW. While that's not a standout number, Lexus says its world-first multi-stage hybrid system makes maximum use of the available power and claims 0-100km/h in 5.0sec, though the hybrid gubbins push the weight total to 1985-2020kg.
Also available is a $15,000 enhancement package, which brings with it all-wheel steering, an active rear spoiler, carbon fibre roof, a limited-slip diff for the Hybrid (standard on the V8) as well as Alcantara bolsters on the seats and carbon fibre scuff plates.
Lexus claims the LC has the highest torsional rigidity of any model it's ever built, including the LFA supercar, and that its new adaptive dampers can switch between 650 damping settings "to deliver a rewarding and hugely enjoyable experience."
Just how successful it's been you can find out on Friday with our first local drive review.
