There may be a 2023 BMW X1 M on the way, if spy photos posted to Instagram are anything to go by.
Images posted by @buschixd show a number of next-generation X1 models in BMW’s vinyl-wrap camouflage being transported on the back of a truck in Europe, with some peculiar details.
What makes the picture interesting is the quad exhaust tips on the small SUVs, strongly suggesting these are high-performance versions of the X1 from BMW M.
Production of the current X1 is due to end in 2022, and given the popularity of models such as the Mercedes-AMG GLA and the Audi RS Q3 – neither of which BMW currently has a direct answer for – it makes sense the company is looking to compete in the niche segment.
While nothing has been locked in, expect the X1 M to gain a powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive, combined with the usual recipe of larger brakes and a chassis tuned by engineers from BMW’s M division. Hybrid assistance is not completely out of the question.
If the model comes to fruition, the X1 M will join a growing range of high-performance SUVs from BMW – including the X8 M, which is also expected to debut in 2022.
