The new-look GLE is scheduled to arrive in Australia in August, with local pricing and features to be announced closer to its debut.
First launched in 2018, the current-generation GLE large SUV's facelift positions it to continue the battle with the soon-to-be-updated BMW X5 and Audi Q7.
It is headlined by a minor exterior refresh with an updated front bumper and grille, new headlight and tail-light graphics, and two additional colours: sodalite blue and alpine grey.
There are also redesigned 19-, 20- and 21-inch alloy wheels for select variants.
GLE electrified
Under the bonnet, the facelifted GLE range will be electrified, with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology added to the GLE 300d, GLE 450d (previously GLE 400d), and AMG GLE 63 S.
With improvements to its existing mild-hybrid system, the GLE 450 has increased outputs to 280kW and 500Nm – up 10kW – while the flagship GLE 450d is up 27kW and 50Nm, to 270kW and 750Nm.
The entry-level GLE 300d now outputs 198kW and 550Nm – up 18kW and 50Nm.
In Europe, the plug-in hybrid variants have received the brand's fourth-generation system, with an electric-only driving range of up to 109 kilometres, an off-road drive mode, and DC fast charging of up to 60kW.
"A plug-in hybrid model is not currently planned," said a spokesperson for Mercedes-Benz Australia.
Inside, the brand's latest steering wheel – as found in the latest GLC and S-Class – features with touch-sensitive buttons and a unique two-spoke design for AMG models.
The air vents are now finished with real metal louvres derived from the Mercedes-Maybach GLS, while additional trim colours have been added.
The new second-generation MBUX infotainment system is featured, but it remains on dual 12.3-inch screens, unlike the GLC and S-Class's larger portrait-orientated central display.
New additions include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the ability to speak to the 'Hey, Mercedes' voice assistant without saying the keyword, and a smart home function to interact with connected temperature sensors, lights, garage doors, and electrical appliances from the vehicle.
When fitted with the 13-speaker, 590-watt Burmester audio system, the GLE now offers Dolby Atmos surround sound, with Mercedes's 'online music' service for Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Tidal.
In addition, an air-quality and fine-particle sensor will become available as an optional extra, with a two-stage filter to reduce pollutants inside the cabin.
When will the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE go on sale in Australia?
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE will arrive in Australian showrooms in August 2023 – just one month after European deliveries will commence. Full pricing and specifications will be announced closer to its launch.
Currently, the Mercedes-Benz GLE is priced from $120,500 before on-road costs, rising to $259,200 plus on-roads for the 63 S Coupe. Last year, it narrowly outsold the BMW X5 and X6 as the best-selling premium large SUV.
It will be joined by the all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV in mid-2023.
