All-black styling for BMW’s fast SUVs will become another exercise in exclusivity, as only 25 of the new X5 M and X6 M Black Fire Editions will be sold in Australia.
The special edition SUVs aren’t any faster or different to drive than regular X5 Ms or X6 Ms, but have simply had a visual pack added to induce a more “sinister” appearance.
Both still have the same 423kW/750Nm 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 under the hood, but the real changes are on the outside.
Sapphire Black metallic paint, dark carbon fibre exterior mirror caps, and a blacked-out kidney grille leave very few non-black parts on the exterior, while 21-inch BMW M alloy wheels, also in black, create an “imposing” look.
BMW says “standard sun protection glazing on the rear windows have the double effect of adding privacy and further subtle menace to the X5 M and X6 M Black Fire appearance.”
Inside the “brooding” cabin, the Black Fire Editions score Merino leather in black and Mugello Red, and anthracite Alcantara overhead.
Piano black trim is also finished with ‘X5 M Edition Black Fire’ or ‘X6 M Edition Black Fire’ signets.
15 X5 M and 10 X6 Ms will be up for grabs, at $205,900 for the X5s, or $214,800 for the X6s.
BMW Australia CEO Marc Werner says he’s had first-hand experience putting the X5 M and X6 M through their paces.
“I am very excited to introduce these Black Fire limited editions to the Australian market,” Werner says.
“The X5 and X6 M are equally capable on the race track, when commuting or when taking the family out on the weekend – I should know, because I drive them personally.”
The Black Fire Editions will be available in dealerships from October this year.
