  • e-C4 under evaluation
  • News comes as petrol-powered model launched
  • Electric variant already available in Europe

Citroen Australia is considering bringing an electrified version of its freshly-launched C4 to Australia, possibly as early as next year.

At the virtual launch of the new C4 this week, General Manager Kate Gillis told media the e-C4 was on the cards.

"It’s on the table at the moment...it's definitely being evaluated for the market, [but is] not confirmed at this stage.

"We'll be able to share more with you in the near future."

Product Manager for C4, Daniel Khan, added the firm would be able to reveal more "next year", suggesting the model could work its way to our shores late 2022 or early 2023.

The electrified C4, which is already available in Europe, makes 100kW/260Nm from a 50kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor at the front.

It has a driving range of 350 kilometres (WLTP), and uses a 100kW fast charger to top up from 0-80 per cent in 30 minutes. An optional 11kW three-phase home unit takes five hours.

If it were to come to Australia, the e-C4 would be the first fully-electric offering from the manufacturer to land here. Expect it to arrive at a premium over its internal combustion-engined sibling however, with UK prices starting from $54,120 before on-road costs.

In European markets the brand offers the E-Spacetourer, E-Berlingo, E-Dispatch and E-Relay, as well as the Ami EV and C5 Aircross plug-in hybrid. However all of these are currently ruled out for us.

The news comes off the back of the arrival of the new petrol-powered C4 today, priced from $37,990 MLP (before on-road costs).

From launch there is initially only one variant – the top-spec Shine – which features the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol PureTech three-cylinder engine making 114kW of power and 240Nm of torque, also found in sister-brand Peugeot’s 2008 GT Sport, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Boss Kate Gillis also said the 2022 Citroen C5 X has been confirmed for Australia, with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant also potentially on its way.

The petrol model will be arriving locally in the third quarter of next year.

No further details about pricing or specification have yet been confirmed, other than to say a PHEV version is "still being evaluated".

"We are very excited about the C5 X coming to Australia and are planning that car at the moment. We're concentrating on getting the spec right. The PHEV is on the table for evaluation, but more detail will be available closer to launch," Gillis said.
