The legendary Dodge Viper is making a comeback according to report from the US.

American-based outlet Car and Driver has confirmed there will be a new Dodge Viper by 2021, with a reveal expected much sooner.

Though we’re remaining sceptical, the report has caused quite a stir with its certainty, and the addition of the information that this Viper will likely pack a V8 bite, rather than its classic giant V10.

Mercifully for muscle car purists, however, the manual gearbox will remain, the report says.

Car and Driver also points out that the next Detroit Motor Show, in January 2019, will line up with the 30th anniversary of the Viper concept’s initial reveal, and that would make a fitting time to unveil the next gen Dodge halo-car.

The last few years of the Viper’s existence were riddled with uncertainty as the car became difficult to sell enough to justify its production.

In 2016 it was confirmed that the Dodge was to be put to rest, and that several final editions were to be built.

With over 30,000 Vipers built between 1992 and its final unit in 2017, with the last run of production and sales being dominated by the hardcore ACR version, which was destined for track greatness.

After setting a 7:12.13 lap time at the Nürburgring, and subsequently shaving over 10 seconds off that to run a 7:01.03, the Viper ACR is one of the most capable road-legal track cars ever produced by Dodge.

If it turns out a new one is on the way, it has a lot to live up to.
