Flying car almost a reality

Yes it looks like something out of The Jetsons, but this flying car could soon be a reality.

American firm Moller International has received $80 million in funding to build a SkyCar, which won’t just be available to the rich and famous, but to the masses.

The SkyCar is designed to fit four passengers, can travel at speeds over 480km/h and fly as high as 36,000 feet.

Should it be built, the SkyCar will utilise Moller International’s ‘vertical take off and landing (VTOL)’ system, with a fully operational test vehicle to be built by the end of 2013. But don’t start shopping for a pilot’s hat just yet. Production models won’t start until 2014 with the company projecting it needs another $480 million to build it on mass. Still, it’s a step in the right direction. Up, up and away!
