New details have emerged for Volkswagen's very special Golf GTI Edition 35, the latest in a line of tuned commemorative models. And to promote the GTI brand further, the German car maker also released one of its most suggestive TV ads to date.

Unveiled online in May ahead of its Worthersee Tour debut this week, the GTI Edition 35 was revealed to be packing a 2.0 litre engine with 175kW on tap - 20kW more than the regular GTI.

At the time, Volkswagen offered few details about the engine, although it was assumed that the extra power had been liberated from the GTI's regular turbocharged powerplant.

Volkswagen has confirmed that the GTI Edition 35 instead draws power from a detuned version of the more powerful Golf R and Audi S3 engine, modified to suit the GTI's front-wheel-drive layout.

Top speed is listed at 247km/h, and the 0-100km/h sprint in a claimed 6.6 seconds - roughly one second short of the Golf R and a few hundredths quicker than the standard GTI.

The Edition 35 will be offered in Europe with either a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed DSG automatic.

Cosmetically, the Edition 35 is set apart from the regular GTI by its unique 'Watkins Glen' alloy wheels, along with the Golf R's dark LED taillights. The special GTI also gets the model's updated LED daytime running lights and tinted windows.

Tweaks in the cabin include a golf-ball shaped gearshift grip, '35' logos on the seatbacks and and door sills, and a unique honeycomb trim pattern in place of the usual tartan fabric.
