A car-based, electric companion to the Hyundai Santa Cruz ute will debut in the near future, helping the Korean giant towards its goal of two million EVs sold annually by 2030.
At this stage, we can't know exactly how it'll look, but we do know it won't be a body-on-frame electric ute like the hugely popular Ford F-150 Lightning.
Instead, a monocoque design will be built on the company's upcoming new Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA) that will replace its existing E-GMP EV platform.
In June, the company told an audience of investors that the Hyundai ute will be similar in size to Australia's traditional utes, making it larger than the petrol-powered Santa Cruz ute it currently sells in North America.
We don't yet know if the new model will come to Australia, although Hyundai's local boss has been plenty vocal in telling media that a "real bloody ute" is coming.
Whether that information was based on earlier plans for a combustion-powered companion to the upcoming Kia Tasman, or if an electric model is what Hyundai now considers a "real" ute – only time will tell.
