No time has been wasted turning the smallest Merc van into a house on wheels

Just days after its official release, the new Mercedes-Benz Citan has scored a host of camper upgrades to turn it into a pandemic-spec traveller.

With the help of camper van outfitters VanEssa mobilcamping, the modified Citan features a double bed, an abundance of storage compartments, a refrigerator and a sink to name a few items.

Being a modular set-up, the unit can be removed to change the van back to its passenger guise, with the 60 kilogram module allegedly taking only a handful of minutes to totally remove.

On top of the large module lies a foldable double mattress, which is divided into three sections – allowing it to be tucked back into the van's boot, while the second row of seats are folded back up.

With international travel restricted across the world, Mercedes-Benz's head of sales, Klaus Rehkugler, believes the Citan camper is the perfect solution to modern holidays.

"The travel and leisure vehicle market is increasingly important for us as part of our strategic orientation. This also applies to the brand new generation of our Citan, which is an ideal basic vehicle for micro camper van conversions", said Rehkugler.

"Together with VanEssa mobilcamping we demonstrate just what camper qualities it has. We are delighted that we are in Düsseldorf again this year and look forward to direct feedback from customers."

While the regular Citan is still unconfirmed for Australian, it's likely similar module systems could be fitted to its badge-engineered Renault Kangoo sibling – a vehicle which is already available Down Under.

The Tourer people-mover variant of the Citan will offer a 70kW diesel engine alongside a choice of two petrol units, which produce 75kW and 96kW respectively.
