The Ferrari F300 Formula 1 car driven by Michael Schumacher in the 1998 season has come up for private sale in the US for US$4.9 million (AU$6.7 million).
Listed by duPont Registry, the V10-powered Ferrari F1 car is said to be the vehicle driven to pole by Schumacher in the 1998 Luxemburg Grand Prix held at the Nürburgring as well as at the 1998 Japanese GP at Suzuka.
Schumacher was tied with Mika Häkkinen for points going into the second-last round, battling with Häkkinen’s McLaren-Mercedes until a tyre failure took the Ferrari out of contention in the last race, handing the 1998 Formula 1 World Championship to Häkkinen.
Häkkinen won the championship the following year, but Schumacher ended up winning five F1 titles back-to-back from 2000 to 2004, solidifying his place as one of the greatest drivers of all time.
Arguably one of the most iconic Ferrari F1 cars of all time, this particular vehicle is one of just nine ever built, and uses a 3.0-litre V10 engine producing 600kW on the way to an 18,000rpm redline.
While the listing doesn’t advertise which of the nine it is, sibling chassis 183 sold at auction in 2014 for US$1.7 million (AU$2.3 million) – just two years after it sold at a London auction for £400,000 (AU$726,500).
