New Skoda models coming: Kodiaq, Superb, Enyaq, Kamiq & Scala

What’s coming from Skoda, the brand whose boss says it is now at “eye-level” with Volkswagen?

There’s a few all-new models that are petrol-powered, some important updates for the brand’s more affordable models, and speaking of that, you can expect a new base model compact car to arrive. But the most exciting addition is Skoda’s first EV.

Here’s a rundown of the cars coming from Skoda in the next 18 months or so.

Skoda Kamiq facelift

The Skoda Kamiq facelift has already been revealed, with the best-selling Skoda model in Australia to get small cosmetic changes for 2024 and beyond when the updated SUV arrives early next year.

There are tweaks to the headlights (including the option of matrix LED lighting), subtle adjustments to the front and rear bumpers and rear lights, and new wheel choices are expected. As standard, you can expect 18-inch alloys per the existing model.

The interior could see some upgraded trim choices, as Skoda has moved to incorporate more recycled materials into its finishes. Further, a standard digital instrument cluster and either 8-inch or 9.2-inch touchscreen media systems will remain, the latter with built-in sat-nav.

Skoda claims that the revised climate control system is more intuitive than before. We’ll see about that!

Powertrains are expected to remain the same, with a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder unit forming the basis of the range with 85kW/200Nm, and a top-end four-cylinder turbo version with 110kW and 250Nm. Both come with seven-speed DSG dual-clutch auto transmissions, and all Kamiq models are front-wheel drive.

Expect the brand to return with three trim grades – Style, Signature and Monte Carlo – with the latter scoring lowered suspension and a specific interior finish with flashy red highlights.

Skoda Scala facelift

The Skoda Scala hatchback – also known as the best car that hardly anyone buys in Australia – will see a host of similar changes to the closely related Kamiq.

Due on sale in the first quarter of 2024, the updated Scala gets a new look front-end design with revised headlights, a sportier front bumper appearance, and the rear-end also sees some small styling changes.

Much like the Kamiq, the interior is expected to see some minor adjustments to controls and finishes, with 8-inch or 9.2-inch multimedia systems available.

The model range isn’t yet confirmed, but it is likely that a two-variant line-up will be offered, with an entry-level version powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine (85kW/200Nm) and a higher-spec model with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol (110kW/250Nm) to continue.

Skoda’s on-again, off-again relationship with the Scala Monte Carlo may be reignited, too, with the sportier-looking model possibly returning.

Interestingly, Skoda offers a “rough road” raised suspension package in some markets, with 15mm increased ground clearance. That’s not confirmed for Australia, though.

Skoda Kodiaq SUV

Skoda’s petrol-powered seven-seater will return in its new, second-generation guise at the end of 2024.

In the next few years, the Kodiaq will be supplemented by a production version of the electric Vision 7 S model. The idea is to offer buyers the choice of a three-row model with conventional ICE options, or a full EV model – which will be the first three-row EV SUV offered by the VW Group in Australia.

For that reason, it is expected that Skoda Australia will bypass the option of a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the Kodiaq.

However, the Kodiaq family SUV will come with a choice of 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines, and just like the current model, an RS version is expected to be offered once more.

It isn’t clear if Skoda Australia will persist with its AWD-only mentality for Kodiaq for the new-gen model, or offer a more affordable front-wheel drive take on the theme, as many other rivals do.

Skoda has confirmed some specifics on the dimensions of the new Kodiaq, including the length – 4758mm, which is 61mm more than the first-gen model – and the brand claims that third-row headroom is 15mm more accommodating, too.

Skoda Superb sedan and wagon

These new large family cars are designed to “fill the vacuum” left by the axed Passat from VW, with a sedan and wagon model to be offered.

The brand has had big success with highly-specified examples of the Superb in recent times, and so it is expected that the two body styles will be offered only with a single engine option, a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, possibly with mild-hybrid technology.

A preview drive we attended at the Munich motor show in 2023 was in such a model.

In terms of space and practicality, the new model is close to the last one, with ample second-row space, new infotainment technology in the form of a 12.9-inch touchscreen and 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and Skoda’s new “Smart Dials” for fan/AC controls, and the brand has shifted to a column-mounted gear selector to free up space between the seats.

Back seat occupants will be treated to rear-seat climate control and ample storage, and as expected, there’s a big boot space in both the sedan and wagon models.

All-electric Skoda Enyaq

The Enyaq electric SUV has been around for a while now in other markets, but Australia will receive an updated version with a more powerful electric drivetrain than in other models sold to date.

That should mean an 82kWh battery (77kWh usable), and a rear-mounted electric motor producing 210kW and 545Nm. An RS version is also likely with 250kW and all-wheel drive.

Skoda claims the long-range Enyaq can recharge from 10-80 per cent in less than 30 minutes, while it should take about 7.5 hours to get to 80 per cent using an 11kW AC wallbox.

While the brand sells a more traditional wagon-style SUV version of the Enyaq in some markets, it is likely that Australia will first take the coupe-style, swoopy-roof version, with the SUV model possibly coming a bit later down the track.

According to VW Group insiders, this model – alongside the related ID.4 and ID.5 from Volkswagen, and the incoming Cupra Tavascan – will form a strong argument against the all-conquering Tesla Model Y.
