If there’s anything more Aussie than lighting up the rears of a V8 Commodore ute at Summernats, we’re yet to find out what it is.
Add one of Australia’s most prolific racing drivers to the mix, and you’ve got yourself some smoked Australiana.
Summernats (which our sister mag Street Machine has strong ties to) is the universal centre for burnouts, so when Peter Brock showed up to Summernats 12 in 1999 to see what all the fuss was about, someone was bound to put him in an Aussie V8 and let his right foot do the rest.
Even without Brock behind the wheel, the 520kW Autotek ‘Beast’ VS ute has no trouble ripping up Pirellis, or burning them for that matter.
The next year, the MOMO-liveried ute showed up to Springnats in Shapparton and proved to be a fire hazard in the most spectacular fashion.
The rears didn’t stand a chance.
Thankfully, the CFA was on hand.
But Brocky’s not the only touring car driver who’s proven he can smoke up a storm. At Summernats 29 Jamie Whincup had a crack at smoking some Commodore tyres himself.
But they weren’t just any Commodore tyres. He brought along a V8 Supercar, because everyone else needed to see how it was done.
Well, not his own car exactly…
…it was Shane Van Gisbergen’s. But to be fair, would you do that to your own car? Those tyres aren’t cheap!
Check out the 1.15 mark in that video, too. A pit stop halfway through the burnout means more tyres to shred.
