As soon as the Northern Territory destricted its roads last year, manufacturers began flocking back to the top end to conduct high-speed hot weather testing.

Or, in Porsche's case, publicity stunts. And if you're going to test a car's top speed, you might as well take something with a decent top speed to begin with, like the incredible 918 Spyder.

It hit 293km/h at Phillip Island, and blew us away with its ability during our recent first drive, but what could it do let off the leash?

A staggering 350km/h, and this from a car that drove the first 25km out of Alice Springs on electrical power alone.
