Stefan Bellof's astonishing 6:11.13 Nurburgring lap record, which stood since 1983, has finally been broken. By another Porsche driver.

And now, Porsche has released the onboard footage.

Timo Bernhard shattered Bellof's record by more than 50 seconds when he took the de-restricted Porsche 919 Hybrid 'for a spin' around the 'Ring.

The 'Evo' version of the LMP1 racer allowed Bernhard to manage a stunning time of 5 minutes and 19.545 seconds.

Afterwards, Bernhard was astounded.

“This is a great moment for me and for the entire team – the 919 programme’s icing on the cake," he said.

"The Evo was perfectly prepared and I have done my best on this lap. Thanks to the aerodynamic downforce, at sections I never imagined you can stay on full throttle.

"I’m pretty familiar with the Nordschleife. But today I got to learn it in a new way”, the 37-year old German said.

Bernhard is also a huge admirer of Stefan Bellof.

Not the first: Read about the 919's record at Spa

In 2015, exactly 30 years after Bellof’s untimely death, Timo raced at the Spa 6-hour wearing a helmet painted in Bellof's famous black, red, and gold.

“For me Stefan Bellof is and remains a giant.

“Today my respect for his achievement with the technology available back then increased even more.”

Porsche says the 919 hybrid Evo now weighs 849 kilograms and, since it's no longer bound by WEC rules, its modified active aerodynamics generate over 50 per cent more downforce than previously.

Thanks to this, it was able to hit 369.4 km/h during its record lap. More than 860kW probably helps, too.

Check out the video above to see just how intense the Nurburgring is when the average lap speed is 233.8km/h.
