A new film based on Steve McQueen’s iconic character Frank Bullitt is said to be in the works, with Steven Spielberg attached to direct.
Hollywood news outlet Deadline reports Spielberg is developing the all-new Bullitt film, which is understood to reprise the character originally played by McQueen, rather than being a remake of the original 1968 film.
Bullitt is widely considered to have one of the best car-chase scenes in cinema, taking up almost 10 minutes of screen time, and helping to solidify its Academy Award win for Best Film Editing.
Alongside McQueen’s steely portrayal of a San Francisco detective, it’s the Highland Green Ford Mustang GT fastback most people remember about Bullitt.
One of the two Mustangs used in the movie – and the actual vehicle driven by McQueen – sold at auction in 2020 for US$3.4 million (AU$4.64 million at today’s rates), making it the most valuable Ford Mustang in history.
Ford has released a number of Mustang Bullitt editions over the past two decades, with the most recent version launching in 2019.
Steve McQueen’s son Chad and granddaughter Molly are said to be signed onto the new film as Executive Producers, while Oscar-winner Josh Singer is reportedly on board as screenwriter.
There’s no word yet on which actor will reprise the role of Frank Bullitt, but there’s a good bet we’ll see a Ford Mustang taking jumps on the streets of San Francisco – and with any luck, a cameo from a Volkswagen Beetle.
