Tesla has cited low usage for the reason behind its decision to stop offering free Mobile Connector cables with each sale of a new car.
The change was noticed by Twitter user Tesla_Adri, with Tesla CEO Elon Musk taking to the social media platform to defend the company’s decision, arguing: “Usage statistics were super low, so seemed wasteful”.
Musk received widespread criticism from owners and regional Tesla clubs, with the company responding by dropping the price of the cable to US$200.
It’s unclear whether the decision will extend to Australia, with the carmaker’s local website stating the “Mobile Connector is included as standard equipment with a new Tesla”.
While a high proportion of Tesla owners have Wall Connectors installed at their homes, many say they used the Mobile Connector when on holidays or visiting friends and family, as well as finding the cable provided peace of mind.
Wheels has reached out to Tesla Australia and this story will be updated with its response.
