Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk has claimed the new Model S Plaid has set a Nürburgring lap record for electric production cars, posting the car's time slip online.
Although there has been no official confirmation, according to Musk, the Model S Plaid was able to lap the famed Nordschleife in 7:30.909 – some 12 seconds faster than the existing record holder, Porsche's Taycan Turbo S.
If Musk's claim is true, the Model S Plaid is within a second of cars such as the 992 Porsche Carrera S and the Chevrolet Corvette C8 when hurtling around the 20.73km course.
Previously another Model S Plaid allegedly broke the Taycan's record in 2019 – but this vehicle was modified, meaning any attempt at officially knocking off the Porsche wouldn't stand.
Earlier this year, an enhanced Model S Plaid, featuring slick tyres and aerodynamics, shattered the Laguna Seca lap record for electric vehicles – with Musk saying today Tesla will make a similar attempt at the Nürburgring in an unrestricted car.
With 820kW on tap, the Model S Plaid is Tesla's most powerful vehicle and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in a claimed 1.9 seconds – reaching an alleged top speed of 320km/h.
