Toyota plans Mazda killer

This sketch might look harmless, but what you’re looking at could be the death of the mighty Mazda MX-5.

The car penned is a convertible Toyota 86 and if it’s made, will pose a very big problem for the world’s most successful roadster.

It will be $15,000 cheaper for a start, with the hardtop 86 already landing heavy blows to sales of the MX-5 world-wide. Chop the top off and Toyota could be poised to land a proverbial knock out.

But happily for Mazda, there’s no guarantee Toyota will build the 86 convertible. Yes a convertible 86 concept will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, but Toyota says it will only build it if there is sufficient interest.

And what are the chances of no one wanting one?
