Snapshot
- Strong results for adult and child occupant protection
- Safety assist systems also score well
- Eight airbags standard across the range
The Toyota Yaris Cross has scored the full five-star ANCAP safety rating from Australia's independent safety authority, complimented for both its active and passive features.
Introduced to the local market in the back end of 2020, the Yaris Cross tested well with its adult and child occupant protection levels standing out – each scoring 86 per cent of the points available in each category.
Full marks were given for adult protection in the side impact, oblique pole and whiplash protection tests – as well as rescue and extraction – while the small crossover lost points in the frontal offset crash, only recording 4.27 out of a possible eight points.
Its pedestrian safety tech was also scored relatively well at 78 per cent, as the Yaris Cross's minimised impact on a pedestrian's lower and upper legs was given the full six points available.
However, a lack of autonomous emergency braking for pedestrians behind the vehicle caused it to lose out on two potential points – although this didn't affect the safety assist score, which covers a different range of equipment.
For the safety tech category, an overall performance of 82 per cent was given after notching up 13.22 points out of 16, with all six functions scoring more than half the points available.
Starting at $26,990 before on-road costs, the entire Yaris Cross range features eight airbags across the first and second row of seats, providing protection fo all occupants.
