Victoria looks set to be the next Australian state to introduce digital drivers licences, following Queensland's adoption last month, with South Australia and New South Wales having already introduced the digital system some years ago.
Victoria's six-month trial of the new digital licences will begin in Ballarat from July 2023, with a statewide roll-out expected in 2024.
The new system will allow Victorian motorists to carry a digital driver licence on their phones, within the Service Victoria app or the forthcoming VicRoads app.
Digital licences are able to be immediately updated with any licence conditions or details, including changes in personal address, updates in expiry and even reflect revoked or suspended licences.
It can still be used as a proof of identification, with Police, businesses and other authorities able to authenticate the digital licences with a timed QR code.
Of course, drivers still have the option of using their physical licence.
New South Wales and South Australia first introduced digital licences in October 2019, with Queensland rolling out similar technology in May after trials through 2023.
Eligible motorists in Ballarat will be able to sign up to the trial through the Service Victoria or VicRoads website from June.
