Video: Legendary Nissan GT-R racer unleashed at Fuji

It’s always nice to see old racecars rolled out of the museum and onto the track for a blast, for old times’ sake.

This time it was the 1999 Japan Grand Touring Championship-winning R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R, driven back then by French racer Erik Comas in the big boys’ GT500 class.

Anyone who’s ever played Gran Turismo will immediately recognise the legendary yellow and black livery of the Pennzoil GT-R.

Powered by a 2.7-litre racing version of Nissan’s RB26 straight-six, the 1200kg Pennzoil GT-R sent its 367kW to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential gearbox. Bit different to the 206kW (or 243kW, depending on who you ask) all-wheel drive road car.

The car was rolled out at the 2014 Nismo Festival on November 30, but as this year’s Festival approaches (this Sunday) Nissan has only just released the footage.

Even with Nissan factory driver, 34-year-old Alex Buncombe, behind the wheel, it looked a bit of a handful around the damp Fuji Speedway track on cold tyres.
