2000 GU PATROL – DEAN DAL SANTO
WHAT IT’S GOT: The 3.0-litre turbo-diesel (the hand grenade) has made it to 306,000km without any engine mods. It also has: two-inch lift on 33-inch Bighorns; VRS winch; Nightstalker spotties; and a 60-litre Waeco fridge. It survived a 45,000km trip around Australia.
2005 FORD COURIER – GREG TURNER
WHAT IT’S GOT: It has a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel. Mods include: Ironman 4x4 bullbar and winch; 22-inch light bar; a set of old Oscar’s driving lights, which I’ve had on my last four vehicles and they do the job well; UHF aerial on the bullbar; and an 80-channel UHF.
I also have a roof rack with a shovel and hi-lift jack on one side, and an Ironman 4x4 awning on the other – this all sits on the canopy. Inside the canopy I have two batteries that run my 50-litre Waeco fridge and 40-litre Stirling fridge.
The suspension has been lifted about two inches to help with the weight of the fridges and other stuff in the ute, as well as towing the hardfloor camper which also has a battery (it charges off an Anderson plug when in transit). The trailer is set up to carry two kayaks.
I have owned it for 12 months and it is the first twin-cab I have owned; all my other 4x4s have been wagons.
Some of the best places I have been to include the Victorian High Country, Rocklands Reservoir, Clyde Mountain, Fraser Island and areas of western Victoria. This vehicle has been set up for touring and I am currently touring Queensland and hope to get to Fraser Island again. I would like to fit a snorkel and have the vehicle dyno-tuned for a bit more power.
