Key Points
- Genesis, Porsche, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce the big winners
- British luxury car brand sales dropped
- Supply chain issues and equipment deletions contributed to results
Despite increasing interest rates, record high inflation and supply chain constraints, luxury automakers such as Genesis, Porsche and Lamborghini achieved new car sales records in 2022.
Genesis, the high-end South Korean offshoot from the Hyundai Motor Group, grew 305 sales (41.6 per cent) in 2022 compared to 2021 in Australia.
It only made minor updates to its flagship G80 and GV80 models, and introduced a trio of pure electric vehicles – the GV60 crossover, Electrified GV70 medium SUV, and Electrified G80 large sedan.
Meanwhile, niche ultra-luxury brands profited from registering more cars on Australian roads last year compared to 2021 – Lamborghini at 45 (34.4 per cent); Porsche at 1380 (26.6 per cent); Rolls-Royce at 12 (25 per cent); Maserati at 34 (6.1 per cent); and Ferrari at nine (4.6 per cent) more.
Sino-Swedish firm Volvo also gained from selling 1687 (18.7 per cent) more passenger vehicles in a year that saw its entire line-up receive minor updates, including the addition of the Android Automotive in-car operating system, to the S60, V60 Cross Country, and XC90.
The automaker also introduced facelifted versions of XC40, related XC40 Recharge EV and XC60 SUVs, while launching the C40 Recharge EV coupe SUV crossover. Volvo axed the XC40 Recharge plug-in-hybrid as well in 2022.
However, most in the red were British luxury car brands – Jaguar, Land Rover and McLaren which had sales drop by 522 (42.7 per cent), 2011 (32.7 per cent) and 27 (30.7 per cent) respectively last year.
The three German marques – BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz Cars – also had sales dip locally by up to nine per cent.
All car brands continued to battle with supply chain and shipping constraints in 2022, with many ditching features such as Qi wireless phone chargers, safety assistance systems, electrically-moving parts, and more advanced technologies in order to keep deliveries running.
