ON THE face of it, the car you see here is just a 2017 model Porsche 911 Carrera.
It’s not a range-topping Turbo S or the achingly desirable GT3 but it might be one of the most collectable cars ever to roll from the Zuffenhausen plant because it’s the millionth 911 to be built.
Finished in Irish Green and adorned with just the right amount of classic Neunelfer cues such as the houndstooth seats, the wood accents on the steering wheel and fascia panel and a spot-on manual gearbox. We appreciate that most German cars do wood interiors about as well as the Brits do waterproof electricals but this one is admirably restrained.
Naturally, Porsche has had a queue of people waving huge cheques at them to own the millionth 911, but the car’s destined for the Porsche museum after embarking on a global tour, taking in Scotland, the Nurburgring, the rest of Europe, the US and China.
Uwe Hück, Chair of the Group Works Council of Porsche, says: “Today, we have the one-millionth 911. The good thing about it is that our colleagues still make them with the same devotion as the first car.”
Porsche claims that 70 percent of those million 911s are still out there, a remarkable claim to be able to make of a car with a 54-year history.
