The VW T-Roc R-Line is a mid-range model in the German car maker's small SUV line-up, priced from $45,200.
It adds some sportier touches and a more powerful engine over the entry Style, for what is one of the more dynamic offerings in the dense small-SUV segment.
Pricing & Features
The T-Roc R-Line asks a $8100 premium over the Style, and immediately goes some way to justifying that jump with a bigger engine with more power, plus all-wheel drive rather than front-drive.
The R-Line's 2.0-litre four-cylinder produces 140kW compared with 110kW for the Style's 1.4L.
A sportier aesthetic is created by R-Line exterior and interior styling, 18-inch wheels with a different alloy-rim design. Unseen is a firmer suspension tune.
Inside, the R-Line cabin gains an enhanced digital driver's cluster and an expanded infotainment system with integrated navigation.
Options include a Black Style package that adds an array of extras, the most notable of which are adaptive dampers, 19-inch alloy wheels, auto tailgate, and a Beats audio system.
A panoramic sunroof and Nappa leather uphostery are other options.
Safety
The Volkswagen T-Roc was awarded a five-star ANCAP rating in 2017 - which will expire at the end of 2023 owing to the crash-test body's six-year date-stamp policy.
Safety features include fatigue monitoring, Front assist with pedestrian monitoring, lane assist, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control with Travel Assist temporary auto-steering, and parking assistance.
The main difference to the Style is that the R-Line's all-wheel drive will offer extra assurance in slippery conditions.

Should I put it on my shortlist?
The R-Line's ride isn't as plush as that of the T-Roc Style, though its firmer suspension and more powerful engine are more suited to the VW's sporty handling characteristics. If you're a keen driver looking for a small SUV under $50,000, the T-Roc R-Line is one to consider.
