The 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross GR Sport has arrived in local showrooms, joining a minor update to one of Australia's most popular light SUVs.

It is based on the mid-spec Yaris Cross GXL FWD hybrid, and is priced from $35,840 before on-road costs – making it $850 dearer than the flagship Urban FWD hybrid.

New additions include unique five-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels, 10-millimetre lower and retuned suspension, GR Sport badging inside and out, a unique front grille with a mesh pattern, and black side mirrors.

There's also red brake calipers, black synthetic leather and suede upholstery, aluminium pedals, and an underfloor brace.

It also features a USB-C port on the dashboard and an air purification system, which is also new for the range-topping Urban.

As announced in May, the flagship grade receives black leather-accented upholstery, replacing its previous brown cloth/leather combination.

In addition, the efficiency-focused, no-cost steel wheel option has been deleted from the entry-level GX, while the Urban can no longer be specified with a bronze two-tone roof.

The wider Yaris Cross range is priced from $26,990, extending to $37,990 plus on-roads for the flagship all-wheel-drive hybrid variant.

Four grades of Yaris Cross – GX, GXL, GR Sport and Urban – are available, with a trio of powertrain choices for a total of 10 variants.

Toyota Australia now offers a GR Sport variant for the LandCruiser 300, C-HR and Yaris Cross, with sportier versions of the RAV4 and Corolla offered in Europe.

A HiLux GR Sport – replacing the current Rugged X – will launch here in the second half of 2023.

In the light SUV class, the Toyota Yaris Cross competes against the Mazda CX-3, Kia Stonic, Hyundai Venue and Ford Puma, amongst others.
